New Years Day and it’s snowing. Real snow, calm, quiet, no wind; snow sky’s gentle light. The first snow plow of winter just rolled by though there’s only a trace of snow at this point. The snowplow is a very comforting sound in the silence of snow. Strangely enough the radio is playing a selection from Kraftwerk’s Autobahn, and it’s perfect. The dog’s are chewing their morning toothbrushes. It’s peaceful here in the Back-of-Beyond. It’s still snowing. Small, cold flakes. This might be legit.

I don’t make resolutions or goals for the new year. I might have done that as a kid — I dimly remember doing that in 7th grade. I am still — even a week away from 70! — not sure that life is even as certain as a crapshoot. I didn’t always believe that. I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but for me, life just boils down to doing the best I can with what I get. I know that’s fatalistic, but fatalism isn’t nihilism. I think it’s good to let myself get distracted by pretty, shiny things in my peripheral vision.

Here’s hoping for a kinder, gentler, peaceful 2022 for my WordPress neighborhood.

    • “Hi Heather and Ophelia! Martha took us for a walk in the blizzard! Your pals, Bear and Teddy” all is redeemed ❤ Hope the temps up there are heading toward those that support life.

      • “Hi all, I’m so excited for you! Our extreme cold warning has been lifted, but it is still too cold for my paws, our first short walk in about 10 days,” Woof Woof Ophelia!

        • ❤ "My human got me boots, Ophelia. They weren't much fun to put on, though. Your pal, Teddy" BTW, Ophelia, I gave Teddy’s boots away. It was like putting a scuba suit on a squirrel. They did work, though. I got them when Teddy’s foot was injured and bandaged, and he still had to go outside.

  1. We have 14 inches of the lovely white stuff and according to the weather predictions 7 days more starting tonight. Easy for me to enjoy, I can’t get out in it, just enjoy from my window. I agree with your sentiment. I wish you and everyone in our WP Neighbourhood the same! Glad your here. You always make my day.

    • ❤ Oh thank you. I love hearing from you and get a little concerned when you have to vanish for a time. We got snow, real snow, out there at the Refuge. We all feel a LOT better now.

      • So glad to hear that. 7 of 9 of us got covid and a death in the family, and i fell and injured myself so wasn’t getting around. Much improved now though so back at it lol

  2. What a beautiful and peaceful way to begin a year! Mine has started with extreme indigestion and no electricity for a bit as temps drop steadily to 13 tonight. And I’m still counting my blessings. No hiccups are gonna ruin this first day. 🙈🎊🤗🐶❣️

      • It did, thank you. I’m out of commission, physically. After responding to you about coffee, I’ve gone 24 hours without any. On wanting and believing the new year to start on a good note, it’s giving me reason to cling to hope. I haven’t kept anything, other than Jello and crackers down and it’s a bit worse than indigestion. Finn hasn’t left my side. ❤️💜💕

  3. Not much for New Year’s resolutions myself. If figure one ought to be contemplating life off and on for all the year. When you come up with something you need to do, you do it then or you may not be around to do it later.

To the extent that New Year’s focuses people’s attention on auld lang syne and the promise of the future that’s good. But I suspect for most people it is just an excuse to get drunk or high and party hardy. Nothing wrong with that either – as long as you don’t drive after or do something else really stupid.

I suppose naked snow angels would be ok.

  4. A milestone birthday. I had mine a couple years (in March) back. My stamina is still pretty good. That’s what it’s about, I think.

  5. Kinder, gentler and peaceful is what I am hoping for. Same thing I hoped for last year! We all need to hang on. And watch the snow if we’re lucky! 🙂

  6. What glorious snow Martha and a wonderful start to the New Year! Wishing you all happy times ahead 🐾💛🐾 xxx

  7. My nine year-old asked us the other day whether we have ever made New Year resolutions, to which I told her that I have, but that I do not believe in making them anymore; I told her that we should be free to make resolutions every day, so that we are less likely to be hard on ourselves when we fail to keep them, and so that we can keep moving forward all year long. 🙂

I hope your year is a great one!

  8. If 2022 is as gentle and peaceful as Bear looks, I will be a happy woman. That is a beautiful photo, Martha.
