“Dude, what’s wrong? You look unlike yourself. You’re not sick, are you?”
“I’m depressed, Lamont.”
“Ah. Well, the old Weltschmerz had to hit in one lifetime or another. You’ll rally.”
“Yeah, I know. Do you remember ANY of our other human iterations? I don’t. I’ve been sitting here thinking about that and trying to get at least a flickering visual image of SOMETHING, somewhere, some time, but no. Nothing.”
“I have a few of those flickers, but that’s all. I’m sure we must have been humans before, but maybe the human mind is designed in such a way that it doesn’t keep decent files of itself.”
“Huh?”
“See what I mean? I can’t even make sense of the fact that it doesn’t make sense that I have clear memories of having been an oak tree and no clear memories of earlier human iterations.”
“You think too much, Lamont. That’s your problem. That’s why you liked being an oak tree. That’s all you had to do.”
“True enough. How can I cheer you up, Dude?”
“Thanks Lamont. I appreciate that, but I think I’ll just go out and wax my board. Maybe when the tide changes the waves will be decent.”

Lamont and Dude are characters I came up with a few years ago. They have the uncanny ability to remember many of their past incarnations which gives them a unique perspective on life, the universe and everything.

Lamont, I liked being a tree too. We’ll pray the tide changes indeed. ❣
Dude is really happy someone caught his meaning. He’s feeling pretty glum and vague these days. ❤
Hang in there, Dude. I’m struggling too. I hope all iterations are new and improved. ❣💚
❤
Dude needs to hurry and get his board waxed — we’ve been having a run of high surf warnings recently! I hope the last of these washes out today’s misguided humans.
Dude would like you to know he’s ON it. 🙂
Shel Silverstein 🥲
The tree 🌲 and the human interactions are precious and so much ignored that it pains us both.
Here’s hoping for decency.
I relate to trees. I think I was/am one. I think time is one point.
I relate to trees, too. 🙂
