April 22

“I love Earth Day! I love the booths, all the kids with their painted faces, all the great printed literature that tells us how to take care of our planet, all of it. It’s just so, I don’t know, so special.

“Yeah? Well you hang around when it’s over an clean up the mess. Then tell me about Earth Day.”

“You didn’t have to take this job.”

“Well, I didn’t have another one, did I? And there’s a baby on the way.”

Claudia affectionately patted her minuscule ‘bump’. “I’ll keep working after. It’s not like it’s going to change our lives or anything. You can be so melodramatic.”

“Claudia,” chimed in the little woman who went by the acronym, “MIL” by her own choice, “Believe me, they change your life.”

“Listen to mom. She had six.” Charlie put his arm around his mother’s shoulders.

“Yeah, but today with all the conveniences? Like diapers! I’m not going to be spending hours washing them and hanging them out to dry.”

“Uh, I didn’t do that, honey. My GRANDMA did that, not me. Really, thinking about it, this is three generations of babies in disposable diapers.”

“Do you want a sno-cone?”

“Love one! It’s awfully hot for April.”

  1. I tried cloth diapers, but disposable won, the childcare just got too stressed out saving the rinsed out cloth diapers to send home. Disposable diapers have come a long way towards recycling Great article

    • Thank you! I’m glad to hear that about disposable diapers. It’s kind of ironic since they carry around one of — well two of — nature’s most already composted materials that they’d have the half-life of precambrian gneiss! I even have eco-friendly poop bags for when I walk the dogs in town. Putting that in something that will never biodegrade seems hilarious and stupid. I never had kids so I was spared both the conundrum and the toilet training.
