Quotation…

Daily Prompt Quote Me Do you have a favorite quote that you return to again and again? What is it, and why does it move you?

I do have a favorite quotation, but it doesn’t “move” me. It just gives good and useful advice. It is:

“Hold your powers together for something good and let everything go that is for you without result and is not suited to you.”

As you might guess, I’m quoting Goethe. This is something he said to his amanuensis Johann Eckermann when Eckermann was trying to decide whether to take a job or not. Goethe didn’t tell him “do it” or “don’t do it.” He gave Eckermann something far more useful than that, and it’s been useful to me.

  1. “How bad how good does it need to get?
How many losses how much regret?
    What chain reaction
    What cause and effect
    Makes you turn around
    Makes you try to explain
    Makes you forgive and forget
    Makes you change
    Makes you change”

    Change, by Tracey Chapman

    • Very. It’s a hard one but it does set things out clearly if a person is willing to step back and take a long look when they reach a crossroads. I don’t think I would have gotten it before I was in my late 40s.
