Happy Winter Solstice!

Running up that Hill with Dogs

On the flat top of South Fortuna Mountain was a Medicine Wheel, a Solstice Circle. I don’t know who put it there and I never cared. It was a wonderful surprise to happen upon once I had stretched my wings beyond Big Dog Health and Fitness Spa and was climbing around the trails north of Fr. Junipero Serra Trail. The first time I saw it was in 1989, before the landscape became a park.

A year or so before, I’d visited my mom in Billings, Montana and from there went down to Wyoming to see the Medicine Wheelin the Bighorn Mountains. I was in my Native American Phase. I had just read Seven Arrows by Hyemeyohsts Storm and I wanted to find my spirit guide. I was pretty sure it was a red tail hawk because they seemed interested in everything I did.
