Daily Prompt Strike a Chord Do you play an instrument? Is there a musical instrument whose sound you find particularly pleasing? Tell us a story about your experience or relationship with an instrument of your choice.

I played piano. I studied under a wonderful teacher who was also a great man. I’ve written about this a couple of times already, so I won’t write about it again. But the story is good. You can read here about Mr. Baer.

I’m not musical. I don’t like performing and the necessity of getting something absolutely totally perfectly correct is incredibly stressful. The creative aspect of music (unless you’re composing) is in the performance and I don’t want to perform. This pretty much reduces the making of music to a voluntarily exercise in frustration — but I did love playing the piano just for its own sake. I’ve thought of getting at least a keyboard, but I was able to imagine far into the future (like 3 weeks) when I would no longer be playing it… so…

I have good friends who are musicians and performers and I love to watch and listen to them. I am a born audience; my role in the world of music is appreciation. Without us appreciators, where would they be?

  1. Music belongs to life. Even mum and dad were musical, not experts, but they liked a good song. I married a musician, I was musical, isn’t it wonderful to be surrounded by music.

    • Yep. I love to hang around with my friends when they’re practicing. They’ve been doing this so long that their practices are performances. They get annoyed with me when I don’t sing along, but I don’t sing along because then I can’t hear THEM.
