Key word, Secret

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Secret Admirers.” You return home to discover a huge flower bouquet waiting for you, no card attached. Who is it from — and why did they send it to you?

That used to happen to me but my mom said it wasn’t good to let a guy buy me flowers all the time and it meant we were having sex and I’d better use a condom or my future would be ruined. She was a strange and neurotic person…

Over the years, I got really nervous when my significant others sent or gave me flowers. What were they up to? It was SO out of character for ALL of them.

There have been a few amazing flower arrangement surprises in my life. One I have written about here (and if you want your heart warmed, you’ll read it). Another happened in China; I came out of my classroom and my bicycle was decorated with yellow flowers. It was beautiful. My students had done it. The best flower gifts are surprises.

Last year I came home from visiting friends for Thanksgiving and found a beautiful Christmas wreath had been delivered. That was awesome. It was from my real estate agent in California. There’s someone I’d love to have as a secret admirer, but I’m going to keep that secret. 🙂

P.S. The flowers in the picture are plumeria which smell incredibly good — in Guangzhou, China they were referred to a Ji Dan Hua, chicken egg flower.

  1. The Chinese children certainty loved you to decorate your bicycle with yellow flowers. consider yourself lucky to have gotten flowers at various times in your life, even if there were ulterior motives of the sender. I have never once gotten flowers except once from my son and it was a pot of miniature roses for Mother’s Day.

    • Miniature roses? That’s pretty nice! I forgot one beautiful bouquet I got from my neighbor when I gave her a ride to and from the hair-dresser. When her husband died I sent her flowers — she was in her 80s and had NEVER received flowers before. She was so touched by that (to me) little thing. Later that year I did her the hairdresser favor and when I went to pick her up, she had her arms filled with fragrant Paperwhites for me. People can be beautifully surprising.
