The Smell of Time

Clean sheets. Irises. Summer rain on the dusty street. Lightning. Mown lawns. Trains. Petunias. Honeysuckle. Bourbon. Applewood fires. Fresh corn. Cigarettes. Pine. Sweaty little kids. Shower rooms at the beach. Sand. Ocean. Night-blooming jasmine. Charcoal. BEEF (not veggie) burgers. Tech-Nu soap for relief from poison oak. Black sage. White sage. Chaparral. Creosote. Dust. Night (you think it doesn’t have a smell?) Tomatoes. Cattle. Morning. Coffee.
