In the Mood

Daily Prompt: Let’s Dance by Krista on February 27, 2014;  What are your earliest and fondest memories of dance?

My dad was a good dancer and he loved dancing. My mom? No. Raised a Mennonite/Methodist, she was ultimately able to bend the rule around herself for drinking and makeup, but not for dancing. Their first date was a dance and in the photo of the moment (taken by a professional photographer) my mom stands out from the crowd. She looks more classy, more grown up, better, than any of the young women around her. She was probably five years older and maybe all those things were true. Ultimately, they married and four years later I arrived on the scene and my dad had a dancing partner.

He had to wait a while — until I could walk — but by the time I was four or five we were dancing. It was the usual thing dads do with daughters. “Stand on my feet, honey,” as they whisk their little girls around the kitchen, living room, dining room maybe, even, someday, a ball room.  Our ballroom was the dining room and the music varied. My dad loved swing and rock’and’roll. We danced to Bill Haley and the Comets, to Fats Domino, to the Ink Spots, to Lena Horne, to Glen Miller,  to Frankie Laine. The dance I remember best was “Rock Around the Clock.” My dad told me all about rock and roll, how it was new and how it started, and all about the great black artists that infused life into it, and the great white bands like Bill Haley and the Comets and Buddy Holly. My dad loved rock, and when the song “Big Girls Don’t Cry” came out sometime in the early 60’s, he was genuinely concerned that rock was dead. Still, the first song we danced to was…
